NACADA board annuls Mututho decision to suspend 6 officials

Nairobi - The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse NACADA board has declared the suspension of 6 officials by chairman John Mututho, null and void.
Mututho Friday suspended the 6 officials, stating that they had been involved in alleged corruption and the loss of KES 99 million and needed to step aside to pave way for investigations.
He suspended CEO William Okedi, John Muturi the tender committee chairman, Antony
Munyui, a procurement officer, and two members of the tender committee, Zed Wekesa and Steven Kimani.
Finance officer Samuel Makini and an accountant Henry Taiti were also suspended.
However, the NACADA board led by the vice chairperson Gladys Nasieku termed the decision by Mututho as personal and that it was made without regard for the NACADA act.
" The CEO can only be suspended after the board writes a recommendation to
the mother ministry … the suspension of the CEO and five staff members
is (therefore) null and void," she said.
She added that there was currently an internal audit to find out the level to which the funds had disappeared, if at all in the first place before taking action.
Mututho also alleged that the officials were behind the withdrawal of
up to KES 500 million from one of the agency’s bank accounts disguised as advocacy funds.
This is not the first time that Mututho has tried to force out Okedi but to no avail, as last year, he also did the same but Okedi eventually returned.
