My proposal was misunderstood, says lawyer who offered cows to marry Malia Obama

29 May 2015, 08:13 Arap Yego

Nairobi - A Nairobi lawyer who hit the news headlines across the globe recently for offering 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats to US president Barrack Obama's daughter, Malia, claims his proposal was misunderstood.

Felix Kiprono made the controversial offer that has caused a stir in the world to the first family of the world’s most powerful country this week, offering to marry Obama’s teenage daughter.

His story was first published in the Nairobian Newspaper and later picked up by international media houses including CNN and BBC.

In a Facebook update on Thursday, Kiprono who hails from Bomet County in the Rift Valley region, explained that his offer to Obama was meant to ‘book’ his daughter according to Kalenjin customs, and was not in anyway a dowry offer.

“I wish to set the record straight that the offer of 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats to President Obama according to Kalenjin customary law is only ‘booking offer’ directed to the adult parents of the first family whom I have liked since 2008…,” read the post in part.

“I have never fallen in love with any minor ... I only like the family ... period!” explained the post by Kiprono, who must have been reacting to online furor caused by his proposal considering that Malia Obama is only 16 years old.

“My Kalenjin customary laws consistent to justice and morality, Article 44 and 2(4) of the Kenya’s constitution and other enabling provisions of international laws ...,” concluded the post by Kiprono.
