Mwango urges corporates to sponsor clubs

26 December 2012, 14:18Francis Otieno

Corporate bodies bodies should sponsor other clubs instead of participating directly in the Kenya Premier League, a senior football administrator has suggested.

Former Gor Mahia Chairman Fred Mwango said Sponsors like East Africa Breweries Ltd (EABL) through Tusker brand and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) should remain neutral and instead sponsor other teams falling outside their domain.

He cited the English Premier League (EPL) where Barclays Bank are the sponsor’s but they have never sponsored their team to participate
in the league despite having the resources to do so. He further mentioned Standard Chartered Bank and Emirates Airlines who both sponsor Liverpool and Arsenal.

“While I congratulate Tusker brand for sponsoring our own Kenya Premier League(KPL),I do oppose the idea of participating in the League directly since there are chances of manipulating their teams to win the League and get the money back . I’m happy Tuzo Milk under Brookside Dairy and Mumias Sugar have sponsored Gor Mahia,Thika and AFC Leopards. I thank the two firms  since they have pumped their money in the soccer industry  by sponsoring teams falling outside their umbrella. I humbly oppose Tusker’s direct involvement in the League.”

Mwango who is a senior Deputy secretary in the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation said that one cannot sponsor the League and a club and at the same time want to participate since that will arouse conflict of interest. That alone can give leeway to court battles since
shareholders and stakeholders can claim their money is being channeled to other unnecessary entities. He condemned the idea.

He lauded the just ending KPL saying there was few incidence of hooliganism and soccer violence adding that the standard of football
in the country have improved tremendously.
