Nairobi - Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has launched a new party to rival regional kingpin Kalonzo Musyoka, but will he succeed?
Mutua has launched the Maendeleo Chap Chap and Unity movement, which aims to help Ukambani leaders and people eek out development for the struggling region.
" This is a means for growth. It will not be a movement to rally my people to queue for food relief but to guide them on how to prosper and regain their dignity as a community," he told News24 on phone.
The move though, has already got tongues wagging in the Ukambani region, as it is seen as direct opposition to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Mutua though, does not want to engage in politics.
" This is a deal for the people. They have seen what progress can be made if we stick together and think positively and they will make up their own minds," he added.
Observers though, think it is a good move for the former government spokesman.
" It is a different option and one that Ukambani people will warm up to because for years they have been failed," Nzau Mutungi, a political sciences lecturer says.
" Mutua's track record in Machakos will sell him to the people and I think it will be a positive move. There will be opposition from the old dogs but that was to happen anyway," he added.
Wiper party leader and CORD co- principal Kalonzo Musyoka is not in good terms with Mutua and is said to be already looking our for a potential candidate to support in Machakos in the 2017 General Election.
