Mum arrested for marrying off underage daughter in secret

02 February 2015, 13:10 Robert Chepkwony

Baringo - A mother and 23-year-old man were Sunday arrested by police in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County in connection with forced early marriage and defilement.

Pauline Cheptoo, mother of a 17-year-old girl is said to have married off her daughter to Chesire without informing her estranged husband.

Confirming the incident, Koibatek OCPD Patrick Nyangaresi said that Joshua Kipkoech Kipruto, the father of the complainant, is the one who reported the matter to the police.

“The mother, Pauline, was staying with the daughter (victim) after divorcing with her husband. But she decided to marry her off  despite her age limitation and without informing the girl’s father,” said Nyangaresi.

He said that the mother alongside the co-accused, Chesire, would be arraigned before court and charged.

“We have instituted charges of forced early marriage against the two. They shall face charges of defilement considering that the complainant is below 18 years of age,” he added.

According to Nyangaresi, the incident is one of the many cases of forced early marriage in the area.

“In this area of Mukuyuni in Mogotio, parents do not take education with the seriousness it deserves. Most of them decide to marry off their daughters to evade the cost of education despite subsidized secondary education," lamented Nyangaresi, adding that the female cut is still done underground.

He urged parents and concerned residents to uphold education and alert the police and relevant stakeholders whenever they are alerted of such incidences.
