Bungoma - A 23-year-old woman from Shivanga village is in police custody for killing her two children aged 5 and 3 by feeding them on a poisoned cake.
The woman, Winnie Taracha is alleged to have committed the act following a disagreement with her husband who was allegedly having an affair with another woman.
Confirming the incident, Webuye OCPD Isaac Odumbe asked angry residents who wanted to storm the hospital to lynch her against interfering with patients.
“I appeal to give those seeking treatment ample time. Lynching a suspect destroys evidence for prosecution. Crime matters should be reported immediately,” Odumbe said.
He said they cannot establish whether the children were indeed poisoned until a post mortem is carried out.
“The mother is said to have fed her children on cakes. But we cannot immediately confirm whether it was poisoned as we are conducting investigations,” he said.
Taracha, the husband to suspect, denied the infidelity allegations.
“It is sad to lose my children and my friends are astonished at what has happened. Rumor has it that my wife poisoned the children because of a disagreement but that is not true. On Friday, my wife and I went to Webuye hospital and we were all diagnosed with Malaria,” Taracha said.

He explained that after leaving the hospital they ate chips for lunch, bought meat and went back home and the following day he left home to check his plot but on coming back, he found them lying on the floor vomiting complaining of stomach upset.
“Elders have banned me from entering my house or associating with my wife but I know she is innocent and someone else could have done it. The society is not good and witchcraft might have pushed her into poisoning the children,” he said.
The grandfather of the children, Moses Taracha said he found out about the incident on his way from work.
“We want to conduct a post mortem exercise but the father of the children has refused saying he wants the children buried soon. Elders are trying to interrogate him to establish what might have prompted the woman to commit such an offence,” he said.
