Nyeri - Residents of Mukurweini sub-County in Nyeri have named four brands of spirits manufactured by two leading breweries that they want banned in their area.
They said East African Breweries Limited (EABL) and Keroche Breweries are allowed to sell their other brands and not Liberty, Kane, Jebel brands by EABL and Vienna Ice by Keroche.
Mukurweini MP, Kabando wa Kabando said the decision to ban the four brands of liquor followed week-long consultations in all the wards in the sub-County where residents were emphatic that they do not want those brands and similar brews sold to area youth.

He said the meetings had been convened to chart the way forward in the wake of the crackdown on illicit and second generation brews that had forced thousands of youth to indulge in alcoholism.
Mukurweini deputy County Commissioner, Isaac Masinde reported that 9 000 litres of illicit and second generation liquors have been destroyed during the crackdown while 50 bhang peddlers were arrested.
Masinde said the crackdown was already beginning to show social benefits with reduced crime levels, adding that there have been no reports of defilement, rape and domestic violence that were previously rampant in the area.
The two leaders made the remarks at Mukurweini town during a public meeting.
