Mukurwe-ini assistant chief assaults a pupil

29 June 2012, 14:14Joseph Mukubwa

A 12 –year- old boy is seeking justice after he was allegedly beaten by an assistant chief who demanded that he confess he had stolen three mobile phones and a radio from a neighbor at Ruthanji village in Mukurwe-ini district.

The boy who is a pupil at a local school says he was asleep at around 2.00 am when he heard some people knocking their door and when his mother opened he was dragged outside by a group of people led by the Assistant chief who is said to have come from a neighboring Gaikundo sub- location

He said the alleged assistant chief Patrick Kariuki Mukere dragged him to the farm where he stripped him and started beating him using a whip and asked him to say where he had taken the alleged stolen items and when he denied the allegations the sub- chief threatened to lynch him.

The boy’s mother Daina Wanjiku says she screamed after realizing the assistant chief was hurting the boy but her screams did not go down well with a neighbor who also assaulted her.

She says despite the assistant chief ordering that a search be conducted at her house, no items alleged to have been stolen were recovered and when she demanded to report the incident at a nearby police station, the assistant chief asked her to agree that they resolve the issue quietly.

The woman claims the same assistant chief had assaulted the same boy another time accusing him of not going to school and asked the government to intervene and establish the reason behind the incident which she says was a mission to settle old scores.

However, Mukurwe-ini DC Isaac Masinde said investigations into the matter have been launched and stern measures will be taken against the assistant chief if indeed he assaulted the boy.
