Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in East lands of Nairobi was named after the first settlers: Njenga who had lots of houses for rental in the area.
The living standards of these people is in pathetic condition, as most houses are congested with poor drainage system, overflow of sewers, illegal tapping of electricity which may cause outbreak of fire, heaps of garbage surrounding the corroded iron-sheets houses.
Mukuru Social Hall is for hire to people from diverse regions of the slum during various occasions. It is ironical because the location at which the social hall is situated is shocking hence the officials of these hall did not put into consideration the environment to set up the hall.

However, the state and location in which these houses are in, is a menace.
Nevertheless, the residents do not seem bothered by the surrounding environment and it is upon the Area councilor with aid of CDF funds to upgrade the living standards of the people in the area.
