One dead and three injured after mudslide

An eight - months– baby died today morning while three family members were admitted in serious condition after a mudslide incident in Mukurwe-ini district.

The parents and another baby are admitted at Mukurwe-ini District Hospital in serious condition after the incident which also destroyed their home and properties.

The mudslide hit one temporary house at Gathaka village after midnight and heavy soil covered them in their bedroom.

The family members were sleeping in their house while it was raining only to realize that a heavy soil had covered their house with rains all over.

Anthony Kamau died during the incident while Wanjohi was badly injured on the head.

One baby who is a twin of the deceased escaped unhurt.

The area is sloppy and hilly and the sandy soil is unable to stick to the few tree planted there.

“They were all asleep when soil covered their house. We heard screams and arrived to help although it was raining very much. One survived,” said Eunice Wangui who is a relative.

Area DO1 James Chacha said over 10 families have been seriously affected as the rains continue hitting the area.

He said the provincial administration had warned the area residents to vacate to safer places.

The most affected areas Gathaka, Gikondi, Thanu areas.

He said the Government will take the affected families to safer places and be accommodated until the rain subdues.
