A woman who had been accused of disposing her new born baby into a pit latrine on Thursday admitted the charges of concealing birth at a Nyeri court.
Jane Wanjiru Mukoni was charged that she endeavoured by a secret disposition of dead body of Peter Mukoni Mwangi, a child who had been delivered to conceal birth at Ithaga location in Nyeri county.
She was arrested on February 14 at Karundas village in Nyeri County and escorted to Nyeri police station as investigations proceeded.
Strange stench from a polythene bag
Mary Muthoni Mwangi, a neighbour, said that she went for a short call at 6.00AM and noticed a strange smell coming from the pit latrine.
She just went on with her daily chores until noon when she went to the latrine again and noticed the stench was still emanating.
Muthoni peeped in the latrine and saw something wrapped in a black polythene bag.
She called neighbours and one of them volunteered to retrieve it.
They recovered a decomposing male fetus after which they informed the area chief, and investigations commenced to see who could have thrown it.
No longer showed pregnancy
They later realized that Wanjiru who had been seen pregnant for the previous three weeks no longer showed signs of pregnancy.
The chief and villagers went to her house where she was questioned and confessed that she had aborted and thrown the fetus in her neighbour’s latrine.
She was arrested and taken to Nyeri Provincial Hospital for medical examination.
The report indicated she had been pregnant and correctly identified that she had aborted.
Four fatherless children would not mean well
In mitigation, Wanjiru said it was not her wish but since she had three more fatherless children, it would not mean well for her to get a fourth one.
She also said she lived in a house that she was given by a good samaritan after she narrated her life predicaments to her.
However, court directed that Wanjiru be remanded awaiting a report from Children’s officer about the three children she claims to have.
