More deaths as Kenya continues to handle Shabaab the wrong way

15 June 2015, 14:49 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The bigger question from observers is, why are the Al Shabaab attacks so frequent? Why are they not prevented from the source?

Once again, the Shabaab infiltrated Kenya with aplomb, this time the difference being that they got the short end of the stick.

The government as well as the Kenya Defence Forces KDF has reveled in the killing of 15 Al Shabaab militants in Lamu on Sunday, a moral victory for the government as it seeks to re-assure Kenyans of their safety.

The larger question though remains. Why are there still attacks in Kenya? Why is it so easy for the Shabaab to infiltrate our borders.

A common saying goes, prevention is better than care, so why no emphasis to prevent such attacks?

Observers believe that the issue lies skin deep.

James Nyaamba, security expert

" I think that there is a big issue as regards this Shabaab menace that needs to be addressed.

" Why is it so easy for the militants to waltz into Kenya like they own the place? Where is the prior intelligence? Who is watching the borders? The landscape?

" How cocky can terrorists get to the extent that they walk into Kenya, and attempt to attack a military barracks. What kind of confidence do they have?

" I think there is a serious issue with our security fabric. Either no one cares or the Shabaab have inside information on our movement and the placement of the security agencies.

" Questions need to be asked as to why they seem to find Kenya flat footed all the time and not other countries like Ethiopia who are also part of the war.

William Kakuzi, security expert

" For me, the problem is in the way we look at this war.

" Do we look at it as 11 Shabaab militants killed or do we look at it as two Kenyans killed?

" If we look at it using the former manner, then we will always have problems. We will always be attacked and we will always be caught off-guard.

" If we look at it in the latter manner, then we will ensure we prevent the attacks taking place in Kenya and then we will stop the killings and protect our country, people and economy.

" Sadly, I think that we look at security in a reactory manner and do nor plan ahead. Until we change that attitude, we will always be the victims of attacks.
