Moral decadence - who is to blame?

24 July 2013, 14:21 Pancras Mutuma

It is bordering normal lately, is it not?

It's as a thing well known to nearly everyone that would take a moment to read news or keep themselves abreast with national news that the moral fabric of the society has been dented severely.

It began with dogs, went on to cows, goats, chicken and lately, donkey. What has become of our morals? What would we attribute to this corrosion of the moral fabric? What is to expect of the generations to come? What examples are they learning from us?

Would you imagine the amount of ridicule the culprits' children will undergo? The taunts they will get from their mates in school and other places that he may visit?

Moral decadence is not a thing that has just sprout. It has been with us since biblical times for those of us that are not atheists.

But the current trend is worrying.

Much of it could be attributed to the secular culture that most of us are so keen to embrace. We blindly want to do things that we have seen being done in the movies. We want to do things we see others do. We want to fit in. We want to engage in acts of bestiality because we think it is okay to try it out since pornography is seemingly an in thing. Teenagers run away from school to watch pornographic material.

A few people may blame it all on poverty. A lack of livelihood maybe? But no. That cannot and should never be an excuse to engage in any uncouth behavior as we have seen lately. Why would you want to engage in sexual acts with an animal simply because you do not have a job? How can we justify theft because we do not have jobs? How can we justify plundering because we lack means to feed our families?

Young people need empowerment. They need people they can look up to. Sadly, the people they should be looking up to are the very ones that are busy engaging in sinful acts, acts that are unimaginable.

We must embrace good behavior. We are only in 2013. Where shall we be a decade from now? What will the future generations be reading in their history? Will they be proud to learn that their ancestors were people with overly corroded morals that never cared for themselves let alone their children?

Parents must instill discipline to their children. They must show a sense of discipline and instill good morals to those we seek to mentor and nurture.

A hundred years from now, most of those of us youth will most likely not be alive.

What are we leaving behind?

Shall we even have anyone to leave behind if a week will not go by without news of a person that engaged in bestiality?

It is a shame and we must change this current trend.
