Mombasa - The controversial Masjid Musa in Majengo Mombasa County has been renamed to Masjid Shuhadaa.
According to reliable sources the new name of the mosque was unveiled by the current mosque committee secretly.
Last month Masjid Shuhadaa, previously known as Masjid Musa mosque had hit both local and international headlines over youth radicalization in the region.
This appears to be another move after the last month’s incident where police stormed the mosque and arrested several youth over radicalization. However police heads in the region appears to be unaware of when the exercise was conducted and why.
Last month the county security committee had planned to shut down the mosque over alleged links to Al-Shabaab and Al Qaeda, but the idea changed after reaching on an agreement that the mosque will operate under a new committee.
The previous committee which ran all the mosque activities resigned in October last year when radical followers of the late Sheikh Aboud Rogo tried to expel moderate imams from the mosque.
It has also been reported that the radical youths have restored the so-called Shuhadaa Podium from where the late Rogo and his successor Sheikh Ibrahim Amour delivered incendiary lectures.
Police have said the incident is under investigation to establish the reason of the exercise.
