Mombasa county finance executive faces impeachment
20 February 2014, 13:33
Mombasa - The Mombasa county assembly is set to debate a motion of no-confidence against the county finance executive, Khalid Walid next week.
The MCAs are accusing Walid of incompetence in the finance docket and failure to properly advise the governor on financial matters in the county.
On Wednesday afternoon, the county assembly adjourned the sitting for the motion hearing since the member who had presented the motion were not in the house.
The motion was presented on the floor of the assembly on Monday by the county assembly’s budget and appropriations chairman, Saad Faraj.
In the house of 34 members, the deputy speaker Mswabaha Rashid ordered the house to postpone the motion until next week Tuesday.
The motion, which has received an overwhelming support from several leaders in the county assembly, will see the executive lose his job if it sails through.
Walid is accused of consistent defiance of summons to appear before county committees, arrogance towards committee members and county officials, and failure to advise Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho on matters pertaining to the county budget.
He is also accused of failing to submit reports on contracts with KAPS, a company that collects parking fees on behalf of the county, as well as failing to submit bank statements to the county for scrutiny.
Governor Joho will however be compelled to sack the secretary and appoint a new one who will also require the approval of the County Assembly.
However, Walid distanced himself from the claims and said some of those who want him impeached have personal interests.
