Mombasa - Mombasa county governor, Ali Hassan Joho has said that Shimo La Tewa maximum prison is an expensive asset that could be changed to a much productive facility to provide revenue to the country and job opportunities to young people.
The governor also revealed that prison is one of the most expensive prisons in the world due to its location, which is not utilized to produce but to consume the little produce from other areas.
Plans are underway to have the prison moved from the sea side to a more interior place to allow space for development of a more productive facility.
Speaking to the public in Shanzu, Governor Joho said that the best way for the county governments to develop was by creating room for revenue without hurting the mwananchi and that if the prison was moved today, then space would be created for the construction of hotels and a tourism site prepared for revenue generation.
The county government of Mombasa has had plans to have the prison moved since last year but has been waiting for a response from the central government over the matter.
Shimo la Tewa maximum prison is the main prison in the coastal region and has the largest population of inmates, hosting more than 2 500 inmates.
