University student drowns in a pool

18 February 2013, 16:21Mwangi Karanja

Police in Kitale are investigating an incident where a 21 year old university student drowned recently at a swimming pool owned by the Deep Sea hotel.

It was reported that Eugene Wafula, a second year student of Bachelor of Arts in Information Science at Moi University’s Narok campus visited the Hotel to meet his friends.

One of his friends Geoffrey Wataka said that he left other friends inside the hotel as he went to the swimming pool only to find him drowning and pleading for help.

He was then rushed to Kitale district hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Wataka added that the deceased had an injury on his fore head.

The father of the deceased Joshua Chesoli said that Wafula was a good swimmer, regularly visited the place and wondered why he was overpowered.

“We do not know what led to the death of our son because he has been swimming in other pools such as the Kitale Club and Kitale School and had never encountered any problem,” said Chesoli.

Chesoli, who is a principal at Mokoywet secondary school in Kitale, wants investigations done to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death of his son.

He claimed that more than three youths have drowned at the same pool for the last three years and the facility lacks an attendant saying that might have contributed to the death of his son.

“We are told this is the fourth death to occur at the hotel but we are surprised no step has been taken and the government has never moved in to intervene,” Chesoli lamented.

He appealed to the government through the district commissioner who is the chair of the Liquor Licensing Committee in the area to be keen enough to vet such facilities thoroughly to ensure they meet all the requirements as stipulated in the law before allowing them to operate.

The area police boss James Mitugo assured the family and the university fraternity that he will give a report soon concerning the incident after completing a public inquest on the matter.

“When we received the report about the death, we decided to open a public inquest so that members of public can participate and provide relevant information to the police pertaining what they know about the death,” said Kimani.
