Mobile registration centres to help IDPs vote

30 October 2012, 15:14Alloys Musyoka

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said that it will ensure all internally displaced persons in Tana River are registered and participate in the coming general election.

North coast region election body coordinator Anastasia Mutua said they will put up mobile registration centers in areas where displaced people are camping after they left their homes.

"Our aim is to make sure that everybody from this region is registered when the exercise kicks off so that you all participate in the coming general election," she added.

Addressing displaced Pokomo people at Tarasa division before she visited Didewaride Orma camp where she distributed relief food to them, Mutua said that they will ensure that no one is locked out of the exercise which is a constitutional right.

Mutua said violence that rocked the region causing deaths of innocent people could be avoided since there were no concrete reasons for such chaos.

She blamed elders and women for failing to prevent such violence which was executed by youths from the clashing communities.

"Women should have played their role by advising their children and husbands not to kill their neighbors because they have a big command to their husbands. Elders failed because they could have helped solve the problem before it split to violence," she asserted.

She said that such issues can be solved peacefully by elders without shedding of blood.

“We should come out these outdated standards of violence perpetrated by politicians and go to another level to prove those who want to divide us wrong. Let’s put them off when they come and tell us such things,” she remarked.

Mutua also urged both pastoralists and farmers communities in the area to accommodate each other and called on them to bury their historical differences and work together for one common goal of developing the county.

"The ball now is on your court to elect good leaders who will be able to fairly distribute your resources and use them for your benefits," she advised.
