Mt Elgon - A family in Kaboywo Village in Mt Elgon Constituency is mourning after two siblings from the homestead who were reported missing on Friday evening after being sent to fetch water from a nearby river, were found dead after drowning in the water source that is in a cave.
The lifeless bodies of the two siblings, a boy aged 10 and a girl 12, were found on Saturday morning in the river by villagers, who braved the night biting cold after mounting an overnight search from Friday evening ,after the two children went missing.
A distressed parent of the deceased two children, Wilson Mboya told journalists that he sent the children to fetch water in the river as usual, but he got alarmed when the duo took too long to return home.
“We got concerned when by 6pm my children had not returned home from the river, and they went at 3pm. I personally went to the cave and found their water containers and they were not in sight. We looked for them the whole night, in vain, but we unfortunately found their bodies in the morning floating in the water,” said Mboya.
Local leaders led by Bungoma Deputy Governor Hillary Chongwony and Trans-Nzoia Deputy Speaker David Kapoloman who were first to rush to the scene before the bodies of the two children were retrieved from the river, condoled with the family of the deceased and promised to address the water problem in the area.
“The county government will ensure that clean drinking tapped water is available to the county residents, especially in parts of Mt Elgon, to avoid preventable incidences like this,”said Chongwony . He promised to lead a fundraiser on Wednesday to help the affected family who are landless, to purchase a piece of land.
Mt Elgon OCPD John Onditi confirmed the incident and asked the residents of the area to be careful especially during this time of heavy rains.
