Minister condemns youth ignorance

25 January 2013, 12:49 Steve Wambugu

Minister for East Africa Community Musa Sirma has said that there is a widespread of ignorance among Kenyan youth in the exploitation of the opportunities that come with EAC.

Sirma regretted that many youths in Kenya have continued to suffer and languish in poverty because they are not in a position to appreciate the opportunities that come with the Ministry of East Africa Community.

While addressing a youth forum in Nakuru town on Thursday, Sirma noted that the young generation did not fully understand their rights and obligations under the United East Africa.

The Minister observed that there was need to carry out proper civic education among the youths in Kenya so as to help them understand the operations of the EAC.

He noted that the main challenge facing the EAC was the level of information gap between the partnered governments of East Africa and the local Mwananchi.

Sirma also pointed out that the 2010 Kenya Constitution outlines the importance of people's rights and quality service delivery by the government of the day, a thing he said many youths were not following to the letter.

He further said that if the youths of this country fully embrace the integration process of EAC, it will greatly improve the lives of many Kenyans especially the traders.

The Minister vowed to work closely with the Ministries of Youths, Special programs, Cooperative Movements and farmers to see to it that the youths of Kenya benefit from these opportunities.

The minister is also expected to hold similar meetings in the coming weeks with other youth groups from other towns in the country.
