Midiwo accuses Mps of taking bribes to defeat bills.

02 May 2012, 18:22Oduor Omondi

Joint Government Whip Jakoyo Midiwo has taken a swipe at Members of Parliament for allegedly taking bribes to either pass or defeat bills brought before the floor of the House.

Speaking at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu during the Labour Day celebrations, Midiwo claimed that some legislators in the August house were bribed by bankers so as not to approve the interest rate caps captured in the Finance Bill.

The Gem MP alleged that some MPs received as low as KES. 50,000 in order to vote against the amendment of the financial bill in parliament.

Midiwo said that a section of MPs were invited to two Nairobi hotels where they received the money.

“If an MP earns over KES. 800,000 per month, why is it that he/she can stoop so low and be bribed by KES. 50,000 to defeat a bill tabled in parliament in the interest of Kenyans… shame on them!” he shouted out.

Midiwo took the opportunity to challenge the locals to keenly elect leaders who have their interest instead of selling their democratic right to barefaced politicians.

Midiwo had tabled the amendment of the finance bill in parliament which was aimed at controlling interest rates charged by financial banks in the country. The amendment stipulated that the interest rates should be reduced to at least 22% and also regulate the minimum and the maximum rate a bank should charge.
