Taxi drivers in Meru town and its outskirts have appealed to law enforcers to ensure they were protected from ruthless carjackers as they carried out their business activities.
Speaking to the media on behalf of his colleagues at the makutano taxi stage, David Kirimi said taxi drivers operating along the meru-maua and nanyuki route had developed cold feet following the mysterious killing of four people in last two weeks.
The taxi driver attributed the increasing number of carjacking cases in the area to laxity among those entrusted with the noble task of safeguarding public security.
He noted the need for traffic police officers manning road blocks to enhance their efforts in ensuring all vehicles especially those on the road after sun set were thoroughly inspected to ensure public safety.
Kirimi also said driver and passengers alike were afraid of traveling along the crime prone areas since they may not know who these criminals were targeting next adding that if emergency security measures were not put in place as a matter of urgency, things might get out of hand in favor of the criminals.
The taxi driver cited a recent incident where a high school teacher was murdered in cold blood after unknown people shot her in her car as she drove home as early as 8.30pm along the Meru-Maua road. The killers were said to have stolen nothing from their victim.
