A notorious jailbird and gang leader who has been robbing from shops and butcheries in Meru Central district has been arrested by police.
Area OCPD Sylvester Githungo said the 32 year old suspect; Simon Mutunga Kauku was arrested on Monday night at Nkubu town in the neighboring Imenti South district following a tip-off by the public.
“The suspect and his gang broke into a tailoring shop on Monday night and stole clothes. They later raided a nearby butchery and made away with 20 kilos of meat,” said Githungo.
The OCPD said police unsuccessfully tracked the suspect at his residence in Kariene location but managed to recover the cloth and utensils used to cook the stolen meat.
He said the suspect who is being held at Kariene police station was arrested while drinking with a group of women.
“We suspect the gang sold the meat to owners and clients of illicit brew dens. The suspect had been released from Meru GK prison four months ago where he had been sentenced for theft. He will face similar charges in court,” said Githungo.
He cautioned the youth to shun crimes and instead engage in income generating activities to sustain themselves.
