Meru County Speaker to act as Governor
17 March 2014, 10:40
Nairobi - Meru County Speaker Joseph Kaberia will act as the county’s governor following last week’s nullification of Peter Munya’s election as the governor by the Court of Appeal.
A statement from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said the commission had received the certificate of the nullification of Munya’s election and informed Kaberia in writing.
“The letter from IEBC has been copied to the Transition Authority as required by law to ensure the County speaker assumes office in acting capacity until the by-election is held,” read part of the statement from the IEBC.
Last week, the IEBC announced that it will conduct by-elections for Meru governor and Maua County Assembly Ward on the same day to save on costs.
The by-election for Maua County Assembly Ward was to be conducted at the same time with the Othaya Member of National Assembly by-election on 29th April, 2014, but will now be held on the same date with that of Meru governor.
The IEBC said the date for the by-election will be announced later.
