Memusi heaps praise on former PM Raila Odinga

25 March 2015, 11:26 Nechesa Chemoi

Nairobi - Newly elected Kajiado Central MP Elijah Memusi has hailed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for his selfless struggle for freedom, democracy, equity, and justice in Kenya.

Memusi, who gave his maiden speech in the National Assembly after winning the just-concluded by-election in Kajiado Central, described the former PM as a man who has given four decades of his life in the struggle for democracy in the country.

“Odinga has overcome immense challenges and made enormous personal sacrifices so that Kenya can be progressive, prosperous and democratic,” Memusi said.

“He brought his charisma and oratory prowess to Kajiado Central. Indeed I now know why he is referred to as the enigma of Kenyan politics. I ask God to bless him for all this.”

Memusi also thanked former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, another CORD co-principal for the support he gave him during the by-election.

“I pay tribute to Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka a man who exemplifies servant leadership and principled politics. I had occasion to witness first hand his silent but steadfast commitment to principled politics during the campaign. I also learnt a lot from the man who is Kenya’s most accomplished diplomat who brought peace to Sudan and Somalia. I thank him,” he said.

To Moses Wetang’ula, who is also another CORD co-principal, Memusi said his steadfast and selfless voice for equality, courage and energy on the campaign trail was exemplary.

He said he managed to triumph in the by-election despite the propaganda that was being spread against him by his closest rival.

“I thank the great people of Kajiado Central who stood up to a massive barrage of propaganda, crude threats, bribery ,abuse of power and empty promises but they still voted for the best candidate. Indeed ours was a victory of the common man against the tyranny of power,” he said.

He said the people of Kajiado Central showed steadfastness, courage, loyalty, commitment and fierce determination to defend their sovereign rights.

“You have demonstrated in this election that in a democracy, power truly belongs to the people. I am humbled and honored by your trust and abiding faith in me and my party. I pledge that your confidence in us shall never be betrayed or taken for granted,” he said.
