Medics arrested for taking bribes to falsify HIV results

Kampala - At least five medical workers have been arrested for altering HIV/AIDs test results after being bribed.
Three of those arrested are medical laboratory technicians from Ntuganmu district while the other two are clinical officers from Iganga district.
According to police, HIV positive men and women have been going to those medics when they get partners who want them tested before playing sex.
Detective Ket Namale said, ''We have been getting cases of couples testing negative but after some time they test positive yet they were faithful.''
Namale said that after suspecting foul play, they laid a trap that led to the arrests. She said two clinical officers in Iganga district were caught red handed while handing over falsified results.
According to the district criminal investigations officer Bosco Gume Ssalongo, the three lab technicians were arrested in Ntuganmu district after being tricked by a couple.
The man was positive and the woman was negative and they went for testing after being planted by police.
The man insisted that he wanted results showing that he was HIV negative because if the woman learnt the he was positive, she would jilt him.
He paid a bribe in three different clinics in Ntugamu district where he obtained the fake results.
Ssalongo said, ''A man and woman claiming to be a couple wishing to wed approached medical workers and the man who was positive demanded that results be falsified in his favor.''
After paying some money, he was given the fake results.
All those arrested will be taken to court to be charged for falsifying the results.
