Media will not be banned from parliament, Muturi assures

17 September 2015, 19:18 William Korir

Nairobi - Parliamentary Speaker Justin Muturi says that a bill that sought to ban journalists and media houses from Parliament will not be passed.

Muturi said Thursday during a meeting between himself and editors in Nairobi that the controversial Powers and Privileges Act 2014 that has several contentious clauses would not be passed in its current state.

He stated the importance of the media in informing Kenyans of Parliamentary matters.

" It will not pass in its current form and I would like to urge members of the media to relax. My tea has received several presentations and will ensure it does not pass the way it is," he stated.

Some clauses sought to gag the media from reporting on issues in the House and another to stop Journalists attending House sessions but Muturi says that as long as members of the Press operate within the law, there should be no problem.

" The issue is whether we operate within the law and as long as that is covered, there should be no problem whatsoever," he stated.

Linus Kaikai of the Nation Media Group, speaking on behalf of the guild stated that the media is important in the nation's growth and thanked Muturi for agreeing to listen to them on the matter.

" It is critical that there is a mutual respect between the two parties and to achieve that is to have enough checks and balances on both sides," he stated.

The contentious bill had been protested against by members of the civil society as well as the Kenya Union of Journalists, Editor's Guild as well as the Media Owners Association.
