Media gagged in Laikipia
10 July 2013, 12:28
Drama erupted at Laikipia County offices on Monday when security agents curtailed members of press from covering a delegation of Senate committee on Education, Information and Technology.
The journalists claimed that Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu had personally invited them to cover the function in his office.
A guard at the entrance said that he had strict instructions from the Governor’s office not to allow the media into the premises.
Small stories concerning Governor
Sources informed the journalists that the Governor’s Personal Assistant named Wambugu had complained that one of them had been writing small stories concerning the Governor.
The journalists alleged that the said Wambugu confronted them last week in front of several County executives at the Governor’s reception area, questioning why they do not write full-page stories.
County assembly deputy speaker Kimondo Ngare condemned the action, saying that it was wrong to gag the media.
When the Senate committee chairman Mutahi Kagwe and his team left the premises, journalists got a chance to be addressed.
Governor Irungu appeared shocked after realizing what had transpired and promised to settle the issue with the journalists and his personal assistant.
