Residents of Nanyuki town woke up to a rude shock on Saturday upon seeing remains of a slaughtered donkey near the Railway station.
According to passersby who flocked at the scene, the meat is suspected to have been circulating in the town’s butcheries.
“Currently in Nanyuki, one can get well cooked meat for only KES 5 - 15. When a person has KES 50, they can feed their families with meat. Cheap is always expensive,” said James Kariuki.
Residents claim that they have been feeding on the donkey meat unknowingly, some adding that their donkeys have been missing in weird circumstances.
Police say that investigations are underway over the issue.
Meanwhile, Laikipia East administration police boss John Tarus confirmed that his team has recovered 24 goats suspected to have been stolen around Daiga area.
“My officers were patrolling Gitugi area on Sunday night and found four men who were armed with spears. The gangsters were driving the goats towards Daiga Hills at around 2.00pm but upon seeing the officers, fled into thickets,” said Tarus.
Tarus added that they were yet to establish where the animals could have been stolen from since there were no complaints filed with the police.
