Nairobi - Over a week ago, news came out of the plight of one of Kenya’s oldest TV actors Benson Wanjau, better known as Mzee Ojwang, who was living in poverty and had fallen terribly ill.
The veteran actor who had worked for the state owned TV station KBC for more than 4 decades, had gone partially blind and was rushed to hospital by the Sonko Rescue team, courtesy of Nairobi Senator, Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
The senator this morning announced that the actor had undergone successful eye surgery and shared pictures of him getting discharged from hospital.
He was joined by his fellow actors, keen to show their support. Thousands of Kenyans rallied together to raise funds for his treatment.
A section of the public took to social media to tell the government off for not taking care of some of its most loyal workers, a claim which was gunned down by the CS Fred Matiangi.
He claimed that all the actors from the show were paid their dues, and the poverty which Mzee Ojwang was facing was because of his “Lack of investment”.
Kenyans have been called out more than once for forgetting their heroes and pioneers in different fields. Many of them end up living lives of squalor, getting scraps for their many years of service.
All's well that ends well Mzee.
