Nyeri - The County government of Nyeri is working to set up a Mau Mau museum to preserve the freedom fighters’ history in the area which is considered the cradle of freedom fighters.
Speaking in Nyeri town over the weekend, Governor Nderitu Gachagua said the museum will help generate income that will benefit war veterans from the County.
He said the government is currently seeking the expertise of the National Museums of Kenya and the National Heritage department to offer their support in setting up the facility.
Gachagua stated that setting up the museum, identification, restoration and documentation of sites that are hallmarks of history, will help in preserving the County’s heritage and also serve as a tourist attraction.
He lauded the efforts by Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and Karatina University College in preserving and documenting the liberation history.
The governor appealed to the National government, the international community and British government to support the veterans acquire land and settle down noting that some of them still reside in former colonial villages.
