The patron of Mau Mau War Veterans Association and a former freedom hero Ndungu wa Gicheru has passed on after long illness.
General Gicheru, 85, who headed the Mau Mau movement during the colonial era succumbed to death after falling sick for about five years.
The freedom fighter died Wednesday night on arrival to Mathari Mission Hospital after the family members rushed him to hospital from his home at Gataragwa area in Kieni West district, Nyeri County.
Gicheru will most be remembered for shooting down a British chopper using sophisticated weapons during the colonial era at Aberdare forest where he was operating from.
