Matatu operators want executive seat in govt

19 April 2013, 18:33 Wangui Joseph

Matatu operators in Nyeri have urged the new County government to allocate them a seat in the executives’ panel.

The over 30 leaders of the industry had met at Paresia Hotel in Nyeri town on Friday to discuss their contribution and role in the devolved government.

Matatu sector contributes 60% of county revenue

They claimed that the matatu sector contributes about 60 per cent of the County revenue therefore their governor Nderitu Gachagua should consider them.

NYENNA Sacco chairman Theuri Ndirangu said the Nyeri county government will not be complete if the transport sector will not be represented by one of their own.

They endorsed James Kahiro, Chairman of Nyeri County Transport Sacco, as one of those who should be appointed as an executive secretary.

James Kahiro

“We have been contributing about 60 per cent of the total revenue collected by the just disbanded four local authorities. We want our chairman to be appointed as one of the executives in the new government,” said Ndirangu.

While addressing the meeting, Kahiro asked the new government to improve services in the matatu sector.

The operators stated that the sector brings in better revenue to the government more than any other sector, hence their services should be improved.

Kahiro said there is need for all the matatu termini in the entire county to have security lights for the sake of late night commuters.

“We also want all roads to be rehabilitated and tarmacked since we spend a lot of money repairing our vehicles. Some roads especially in the rural areas are in a deplorable state,” added Kahiro.

He also asked for improved drainage system at all major termini in towns and erection of hygienic public toilets.
