Nairobi - A matatu has crashed and rolled along Waiyaki way in Nairobi after the driver allegedly fell asleep and hit an electricity pole.
The incident took place near Kianda School in Nairobi and caused a heavy traffic jam Thursday evening.
According to passengers, the driver lost control after falling asleep just after 4 PM in the evening on the usually busy highway.
The driver apparently lost his head after several attempts to fall asleep and when he finally did, he hit the electricity pole which was carrying a transformer, turned and rolled.
8 passengers in the 14 seater matatu were slightly injured in the accident and rushed to nearby hospitals.
The driver of the matatu escaped immediately after the accident.
" I saw the matatu moving in a very unstable manner all the way from the ABC place junction," Vincent Okoth who was driving behind the ill fated matatu told News24.
" I tried to overtake him on a number of occasions but he was doodling all over the road. Now we know why," he added.
Police and Kenya Power officials arrived at the scene quickly to try clear it, as electricity lines lay on the road, a ominous danger sign for motorists and members of the public.
