Nyeri - An aging couple and their three farmhands were Thursday admitted at Outspan Medical Hospital's ICU section in Nyeri after they were set on fire by unknown people.
However, police said they have launched investigations into the incident which occurred at Kihatha location early Thursday morning though no arrests have been made.
67-year-old Joseph Githinji and his 65-year-old wife, Rose Wanjiku, together with their farmhands were set ablaze using fuel by three masked men.
According to Githinji’s brother, Mathenge Kimaru, the said thugs were demanding for money but the couple did not have any cash money to give to them, which made them to harm them.
While addressing the media at Outspan Hospital where the victims were admitted, Mathenge reported that the thugs started by harassing and assaulting the three workmen during the 6.00am incident.
One attempted to escape but returned after he was threatened with a rifle.
They escorted the farmhands to the main house, and then to Githinji’s bedroom where they committed the offence.
They locked the bedroom from outside and set the house on fire leaving the five burning before mysteriously escaping.
Other items in the seven-roomed house were also destroyed.
Mathenge said the family’s cook was lucky because he managed to escape secretly after sensing danger, and then alerted neighbours who came to their rescue.
Outspan Medical Hospital consultant surgeon, Dr.William Kibe confirmed that the victims sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the ICU section of the hospital.
He stated that the old woman sustained burns of 75 percent while his husband had about 50 percent burns.
Kibe further said the farmhands had 40 percent burns adding that they were responding well to treatment.
In a rejoinder, a police officer not authorized to speak to media said they are following leads on family disputes.
The officer said the thugs were armed with super petrol in a container but they instead used kerosene which they obtained from the kitchen to scald the victims.
He however dismissed claims that the thugs were armed with rifles as had been reported by family members and the cook.
