Gangsters leave 1 dead, 2 injured

01 March 2013, 18:14 Alloys Musyoka

Tension is mounting in Malindi town after one person was killed and two others sustained injuries following a night attack by a gang of over 50 people who were armed with pangas and Rungus.

Sources said the gang was in a certain regalia and masks when attacking the trio before they fled to unknown areas without stealing anything from the them.

However, Malindi district security committee said that according to the victims, the assailants were over 20 armed with machetes and other crude weapons.

Malindi DC Joshua Nkanatha who is also the security chair said that the three were rushed to Malindi district hospital where one of them died.

He said those attacked were two women and one man but one of the women died while the rest sustained injuries and were later discharged from Malindi district hospital.

He said they could not link the incident with any group so far adding that security officials are on the ground following certain leads to arrest suspects over the same and know the motive of the assailants.

Nkanatha urged locals to remain calm since security has been beefed up to ensure that they vote peacefully.

"We want locals to cooperate with police and give them information which can lead to arrest of criminals," he said.

He further pointed out that they have received General Service Unit police who will work with other police officers in the area to ensure there is security.

The DC assured locals that security patrols will be increased in all parts of the tourist hub to keep them protected.
