Nairobi - Safeguard Orphans and Widows Organisation (SOWO) in partnership with the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation launched SOWO-Kogelo Marathon to help raise funds for education of the disadvantaged, orphaned and vulnerable children in Siaya County.
Speaking during the launch of the marathon Saturday, Peter Oduor, the SOWO Chairman, said the marathon seeks to raise funds for financial support in form of fees, uniform and writing materials for the enrolled children.
"Our overall goal is to promote Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) to access quality education required to help them realize their full potential and long-term sustainable development," stated Oduor.
"We have been privileged to support 1 400 OVCs to acquire education, and are currently supporting 834 children in primary schools, 25 in secondary and four in university," he added.
Oduor lamented that inadequate finance remains a problem, saying it has been exacerbated by the overstretched community structures that cannot absorb the ever-rising number of OVCs. He cautioned that the situation poses a potential threat to the economic, social and cultural stability in the society.
He commented the organization's financial partners for consistent support, urging them not to give up for the benefit of the needy OVC children.
"Problems of educating OVCs are real but when many are educated, poverty in Siaya County can become history," said Oduor.
The SOWO-Kogelo Marathon dubbed,'Run for Life' will take place on Oct 19, 2013 in Siaya County.
