Mapping and audit of quarries to begin this month

Nairobi - Mining Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala has said government will carry out an audit and mapping of all quarries in the country from this month.
Balala said after the passing of a Mining Bill by the Senate, quarries will be regulated for health and safety purposes.
He said the Bill would regularise operations in the mining sector so that the country’s mineral wealth could be of benefit to citizens.
“The mapping will also address quarries’ impact on the environment and ensure quarry workers were safe,” he said.
Speaking at Birithia Girls Secondary School in Othaya Nyeri County during a prize giving ceremony, Balala said disparities in price of stones produced in North Eastern and those produced in Central will be controlled.
“There has been mass movement of young people from Central to North Eastern because of price difference. For instance, in Mandera County quarry owners pay four times of what is paid in Central,” Balala noted.
