Mandera wall a waste of time and money, Kalonzo says

Nairobi - Building a wall in Mandera to stave Kenya off the threat caused by terror forces in Somalia is a waste of time and money, CORD leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said.
Kalonzo says that the wall, which will cost taxpayers billions of shillings will not help in the fight against terror simply because the Shabaab threat has evolved.
" This war is now in Kenya. Shabaab are targeting Kenyans like you and me. It is no longer just Somalis. It is Kambas, Luhyas and Kikuyus," he told Students during a talk at the University of Nairobi.
" It is therefore ridiculous to hear that a wall is being constructed along
the border. I wonder if they will construct another in Eastleigh … then
you ask yourself. How many walls are we going to construct?," he posed.
He insisted that the time and effort put into the wall should be instead transferred to building a better trained and equipped as well as reasonably paid police force.
" The focus should be on strengthening our intelligence agencies as well as police force which is ill equipped," he added.
The wall whose construction has already begun will cost Kenyans in the excess of KES 200 billion to build.
" It is a lot of money which can honestly be put elsewhere," he added.
Kenya believes that the wall will cut down border crossing by Shabaab militants and ensure focus remains on dealing with the Shabaab from inside Somalia.
