Man to spend three years in jail for stealing beans

Nanyuki - A man who stole 17 kilograms of beans among other items has been slapped with a three-year jail term by a Nanyuki court.
Richard Kinyua admitted to stealing the beans and a car battery all valued at KES 6 700.
He allegedly stole the property from Charles Maina on February 15, 2015 at Mwireri area in Laikipia County.
According to the prosecution, Maina had left home at around 9.00am that day, but when he returned later he found the beans and car battery that he had kept in his kitchen were missing.

He reported the matter at Umande police station after being informed by a friend that the accused was seen carrying a luggage near his house.
The accused was later arrested at Mwireri shopping centre and escorted to his house where a search was conducted and the said items recovered.
However, while in court, the accused asked for leniency but the Senior Resident Magistrate, Evanson Bett, noted that he was not a first offender and therefore deserved a custodial sentence.
