Man stabbed to death at a drinking den

08 April 2014, 08:12 Arap Yego

Bungoma - Police in Bungoma have launched a manhunt  for a man who stabbed his friend to death on Sunday night following a quarrel that broke out at a drinking den.

The deceased man aged 32 years, is said to have engaged in an alcohol induced verbal brawl with the assailant, who melted into the darkness after stabbing him with a kitchen knife in the back  in Terem Village.

Peter Kiboi the Kapkateny Location Chief who immediately rushed to scene after the incident said a manhunt for the suspect, who is well-known in the area, has been launched by security agents.

“The suspect, according to the report we received became a nuisance to his drinking buddies.  They tried to shut him down in vain.   He was thrown-out of the house they were drinking from, but he turned against the man who threw him out fatally stabbing him in the back,” Kiboi told journalists.

The chief at the same time appealed to the area residents to be calm, amidst reports that the man’s killing had caused tension amongst two communities in the area.

“This is not a matter between two ethnic communities, it is an incident between two individuals.  I plead with the residents to be calm and let security agents do their work,” said Kiboi.

Area residents led by John Sonit, the Mt. Elgon Constituency Development Fund (CDF) manager, condemned the incident and called upon security agents carry crackdown on illicit brew dens that are mushrooming in the area.

“Most youth in this area, waste a lot of their time drinking instead of engaging in meaningful activities like farming. National administrators including chiefs and their assistants should work hand in hand with other security agents to curb the vice,” said  Sonit.
