A middle aged man was Tuesday seriously injured after he was shot by police during a demonstration near Moi Equator Girls High School along Nanyuki - Nyeri highway.
Kimaru Ngatia is fighting for his life at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital after being shot while escaping from the police who were using live bullets and tear gas to disperse the over 400 protesters.
Police officers from Naromoru station were not able to disperse the crowd using tear gas and decided to seek help from their counterparts from Nanyuki when the running battles ensued.
The demonstration was held by members of Mt. Kenya West Nanyuki Forest Community Association who demanded the ousting of their chairman Michael Kibera.
They claimed that Kibera has been misappropriating over KES 19 Million given to the association by Community Development Trust Fund.
The demonstrators had barricaded the busy highway for more than three hours and engaged the police from both Nanyuki and Narumoru in running battles for the better part of the evening.
Efforts by the protesters to seek address from Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua bore no fruits as the security agents forced them out of the busy road.
The irate members vowed to continue with their demonstration until their chairman is removed.
By the time of going to the press, Kibera could not be reached for a comment.
