Man sentenced to life for defiling two-year-old girl

01 October 2014, 14:25 Oduor Omondi

Nyando - A man who defiled an underage girl has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Nyando law court.

Samuel Ochieng Odago was jailed for life after being found guilty of the offence by Nyando Senior Resident Magistrate Patrick Wechuli.

The charge sheet stated that on February 6, 2014 at around 10.30 am at Tura sub-location in Kisumu County, he defiled the two-and-a-half-year-old girl.

The prosecution led by Inspector Francis Oyango told the court that the culprit intentionally and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the minor.

In mitigation, Odago who could not help but shed tears pleading for leniency asked the court to forgive him considering that he was in a bad state of health and has never committed any other offence that could single him out as notorious.

Wechuli in his ruling described the act as “a very sad and unfortunate case of two-and-a-half-year-old girl being defiled by a fully grown up man.”

“The act causes trauma, anguish, bewilderment and utter terror on the girl and therefore, the offender deserves a severe sentence to serve as an example for others like him,” he stated.

Wechuli further expressed hope that as the girl grows up and becomes aware of what really happened to her, she will find comfort in the fact that justice was actually done by the court of law.

“The court stood by the minor and fought in her honor to ensure not only that justice was done but also that her integrity was protected in accordance with the law,” he concluded.

Odago has 14 days within which to appeal against the life sentence.
