Nairobi - A man has been sentenced to death for stabbing his wife 23 times in an argument over a mobile phone.
Bernard Mwenga was sentenced to death Tuesday for committing the offence in Mlolongo estate October 2007.
Mwenga allegedly followed his wife Catherine Mbete to the salon she worked in after a domestic argument and stabbed her 23 times in different parts of the body.
He had stated that he was under the influence of alcohol whilst committing the offence as he had drunk 7 bottles of Kenya Cane spirit.
He argued that he did not remember committing the crime.
" This is clearly a case of premeditated murder as the accused had previously attempted to harm his wife and cannot be tolerated at all," Kimaru said.
Judge Luka Kimaru said that the sentence would deter other couples from solving domestic squables using violent means.
Mwenga will be detained at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison until his sentence is meted out to him.
