Man sentenced to death for drinking buddy's murder

Nairobi - A man, who killed his drinking buddy shortly after they had staggered out of a Nairobi pub, has been sentenced to death.
Julius Macharia 22, was sentenced to death by the Nairobi High Court for the murder of Ben Mwangi, with whom he had been drinking on the night of June 30 2010 when he was killed.
The court heard that the two men were fighting over a barmaid, who was a girlfriend to the deceased.
The barmaid, identified as Lucy Wairimu told the court that on the material day, the two men started fighting – a brawl which extended up in Mwangi’s house in Kayole.
Justice Nicholas Ombija, of the Nairobi High Court ruled that the murder case had been substantively proved against Macharia, and handed him the death sentence.
Macharia’s co-accused, a teenager Boniface Mwaura, was convicted but put at the president’s mercy after it emerged that he is only 17 year old.
" The prosecution has established beyond reasonable doubt that the two accosted Mwangi soon after he left a local club and stabbed him several times. He succumbed to the injuries after being admitted to hospital, which proves the accused had common intention to kill him," ruled Ombija.
