Kampala - Police in Uganda are holding a 65-year-old man for allegedly defiling his three underage granddaughters and infecting them with HIV/AIDs.
According to the girls mother, 28-year-old Florence Nakayiza, the defiled girls are aged 8, 10 and 12 years.
Nakayiza said, ''When I separated with my husband, I took my three daughters and a son to my mother's home in Luwero district. I got a job in Kampala as a cleaner in the hotel.''
She explained that her mother separated from her father and so she lives alone, not far away from her grandparents' home.
Nakayiza said that last week, she received a call from her mother requesting her to go to the village urgently saying that her children had been diagonised with HIV/AIDs at a free testing exercise that was taking place at the village.
She said that she collapsed and after recovering went to Luwero where she took the children to a private doctor who tested them and confirmed their status.
Nakayiza and her six-year-old son tested negative.
''When I interviewed the girls, they told me that their grandfather, Joseph Semuwemba, has often defiled them. They said that they had reported to the grandmother but she told them to keep quiet,'' she narrated.
She reported the matter to police and Semuwemba was arrested to the disappointment of relatives who are saying that she should not have reported to police.
He will soon appear in court to face charges of aggravated defilement which carries a death sentence according to the country's penal code.
''My children are now on ARVs. They need to feed well but my financial status is appalling. I appeal to well wishers to come to my aid,'' she said.
