Man nabbed with counterfeit US dollars in Vihiga

Vihigia - A 26 year old man is being held at the Mudete police station after he was found peddling fake currency in Sabatia Constituency Vihiga County.
The man was nabbed on Tuesday night with over $8100, while at the Mudete market going on with his duties in the region.
“The police arrested the man, who had $8100 of fake currency on his person. The suspect will appear in court at a later date after police have conducted investigations into the matter,” Sabatia Police boss Martha Mutegi said.
Mutegi said that cases of fake currency in the region have been rampant in the past, with fraudsters targeting traders involved in gold mining often.
“Those who come to buy gold in this region, which is mined on small scale, often bring fake currency to the people who are on the ground, and they only realise so after they have left,” she said.
She informed the press, that more officers would be placed in the area to curb the incidents of fake currency smuggling.
