Bungoma - A middle-aged man is being held by police in Mt Elgon sub-County after being found in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle and eight rounds of ammunition hidden under a sofa-set seat in his house.
Policemen who were tipped by a member of the public raided the man’s house at dawn on Friday morning in Nomorio Village, and found the weapon after a brief search in his living room.
The Man, who was still in bed at the time of the raid, was swiftly arrested by the security agents and he is currently being held at Kapsokwony Police Station, waiting to be arraigned in court.
Confirming the incident, Mt Elgon Police Boss, John Onditi who spoke to journalists said the arrest was made after members of the public shared information with his officers.
“My officers received a tip-off; they swung into action only to recover the gun and the rounds of ammunition and arrest the culprit. We encourage more people to come out and volunteer information to security agents on individuals they suspect to be criminals,” said Onditi.
The OCPD asked residents of the area who own illegal firearms to surrender them before law-enforcers pounce on them and put them behind bars.
“I am appealing to those owning guns to give them up and be pardoned. We have a list given to us by the public, and it is only a matter of time before we crackdown on individuals suspected to be in possession of illicit firearms,” warned the OCPD.
Meanwhile, two suspected poachers dealing in game meat were arrested on Thursday evening by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) at Kongit area, in Mt Elgon Forest.
The duo, who surrendered to the officers, was found skinning a buffalo they had killed in a forested area. They will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete according to police. For the latest on national news, politics, sport, entertainment and more follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page!
