Vihiga - A family dispute at Lusaya village in Vihiga left a 38-year-old man dead Sunday after he hanged himself in his sitting room, and his wife hospitalised at Mukumu Mission hospital with grave injuries.
The early morning incident left villagers stricken with grief with the aggrieved family lacking a proper explanation for the death.
Bilha Mwanisa, the mother to the deceased said that his son and wife started wrangles on Sunday evening, which were to later on extend late into the night and later on brewed the unprecedented tragedy.
“At around 7Pm, I heard children saying that their house was on fire. When I ran to the scene, it was horrible. One could not get into the house as everything was on fire,” Mwanisa said.
She explained that after the fire tragedy at night, the man disappeared while the woman was rescued by the neighbours and rushed to the hospital, although she was badly burnt.
“My son disappeared and we couldn’t get him on that night. I was later to wake to in the morning and find him hanging on the roof of his sitting room,” the mother said.
The deceased, Kevin Bunali, had four children both orphaned now as their two mothers had passed on earlier. He worked as a carpenter.
The wife, 25-year-old Judith Deizo, who is now hospitalised, was his third wife and has no child with him.
Her mother-in-law said that she often traumatised her foster children which could be a reason why her husband decided to kill himself.
“He has been complaining that his four children are being mistreated by his wife while he away, and even in his presence,” she said.
Neighbours said that the woman was an incessant troublemaker, often disturbing the man and beating his orphaned children.
“Since they got married earlier last year (2012), there has been no peace in that house as they have been fighting each other often,” one of the neighbours who didn’t want to be mentioned said.
Vihiga police Boss, Alfred Angengo said that they are investigating the incident.
The body of the deceased was taken to Vihiga Hospital mortuary.
