Man gets 30 years for child trafficking

Nyeri - A man has been fined KES 30 million in default serve 30 years in jail by a Nanyuki court after pleading guilty to child trafficking charges.
Nyaga Njeru was charged that on October 26 at Solio village Nyeri County, he was found trafficking in person by way of deception to an unknown direction a child aged 14 years for the purposes of child labour exploitation.
According to the prosecution, on October 19 the minor was with two other girls who had been sent home for school fees.
On their way home, they met the accused person who approached them and informed them that he was in a position to secure them employment as house helps in Nairobi.
Njeru advised them to go home and take clothes so that they could proceed to Nairobi.

However, the minor went home and gave the information to her sister who warned her against leaving for Nairobi.
On October 25, the minor met the accused person in church when he gave her KES 60 to board a motorcycle to go home and collect her clothes.
Before she arrived at the agreed place of meeting, her sister saw her and remembered her plan to go to Nairobi. She informed police officers who arrested the accused person.
However, in mitigation the accused person prayed for leniency saying it was his first time to do such work, and that he has grand children who depend on him.
Senior Resident Magistrate Evanson Bett passed the ruling noting child tracking was a serious offence demanding deterrent.
